Grace Christian School is a private, non-profit K-12 school that offers high academic standards and meaningful spiritual training to the families of Southwestern Michigan.
At Grace Christian School we have a set of Core values that define who we are as a community of families and educators. Core values are deep seated beliefs that can’t be manufactured. They are either present in the things you do, or they are not. At the same time, it is important for those values to be cared for and cultivated. Otherwise they can cease to be values. The core values of Grace Christian School are truth, relationships, mentoring, academics, excellence, and service.
The first core value is truth. In my opinion it is fitting and right that truth holds the primary place in our core values. In John 14:16 the Bible states that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life”. From this it is made clear that if we want to devote ourselves to truth, we must devote ourselves to the person of Christ. This is why we place everything at Grace Christian School under the Lordship of Christ. He must be the source and determiner of truth in our lives. Secular education promotes each person as his or her determiner of truth.
In many literature classes taught in other schools students no longer take time to consider the author’s point of view, but instead take time talking about what the story means to each individual. I understand the importance of gaining multiple perspectives in any study, but if I do not subject my opinions and interpretations to some higher standard of truth than how can I evaluate my thoughts? Jesus Christ, the embodiment of truth is the ultimate standard of truth I must set for my life. As an institution devoted to truth, we must also present Christ as Lord to our students.
Secondly, John 14:6 informs us that Jesus is the only way to the father. This presents the highest truth that our students must learn about. It is often called the good news; however, it must be preceded by the bad news. The truth of the gospel is that every one of us is a sinner in need of salvation, but (here comes the good news) Jesus offers us the free gift of salvation through His atoning work on the cross. Secular education believes that people are basically good and limitless in their potential. An education tied to truth understands that people are fallen in need of a savior and our full potential can only be found through a relationship with Christ.
Truth is the primary value we hold to at Grace Christian School. If we hold to this value it will guide us to be a school which truly makes a difference in the lives of students.
In Christ’s Service,
Jonathan W. Kohns, Ed.D.
